New forecast model cycle brings highest-ever resolution

ECMWF released last month a new model cycle to improve global weather forecasts with a new record-breaking resolution.

The new grid on which forecasts are run has up to 904 million prediction points, which is 3 times as many as before, while the accuracy of forecasts is improved by 2 to 3% for many parameters.

Together with other upgrades to ECMWF’s Integrated Forecasting System (IFS), the changes mean that Europe’s weather can now be predicted with more detail, with greater accuracy and, as a result, up to half a day further ahead.
